Lagos State Government Targets 10 Million Trees By 2020
The Lagos State Government says it intends to plant 10 million trees by 2020 as part of move to mitigate the impact of climate change. So far, the state government has planted about six million trees since the launch of the tree planting campaign in 2008. Speaking at the 2016 Tree Planting Day, which took place at the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Camp, Orile-Agege area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Thursday, State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode disclosed that his administration was working frantically to meet the target of planting 10 million trees by 2020. He said the annual event was one of the most reliable and cheapest means of combating the effect of global warming and climate change, adding that planting of trees was very important for the environment as trees provided oxygen, cool the atmosphere, help conserve energy, save water, prevent erosion, among others.
